It's often hard to picture where Noumea (or New Caledonia in general) actually is. So here are a few Google Earth maps that might help. The first is a general South Pacific map with a yellow pin on Noumea, the city where we live.
The second shows exactly where our house is. The yellow pin is on Residence Le Clipper, our nautically-named apartment building with a shiny blue roof. The white square to the Northwest is the receiving building for all the big Australian cruise ships that pass through here. And the red-roofed building directly to the west of us is "Casino Johnston" our friendly neighborhood grocery store. The green space to the Northeast is the Place de Cocotiers, a lively public park in the center of town. Yesterday we bought some dance rattles from Vanuatu there.
And finally, the third photo shows a larger view of the island. You'll notice it's made up of several pixilated blocks that don't really form a complete image. That's because there's nothing there. Noumea's the only town above 4,000 people in the entire country. Google Earth's engineers probably got to this part of the world, and were like "Screw it. No one's gonna notice."
