Odile, our hostess in the tribe of Wérap, showing off the bougna she cooked us for dinner. Bougnas are made by wrapping up coconut, yams, bananas, taro and sweet potatoes along with chicken or fish in a packet of banana leaves. The whole bundle is then put in an earthen oven (a hole in the ground with hot rocks) and left to cook for about 2 hours. Delicious. Especially for those (like Chris) who enjoy starchy vegetables.
This is the road we had to drive on for about an hour in our rented Renault Twingo. A harrowing experience. We were touring around the very, very north of the Grande Terre, "le bout de la Calédonie," close to Poum (about five hours from Nouméa). The whole region is all arid niaouli tree savannah. Though I've actually never been to Australia before, I imagine parts of it kind of look similar to this.
Back in Nouméa, at the daily fish market. If you want to buy an entire 7 ft long tuna, this is the place. Its also fun just to go look at all the live crabs trying to crawl off the counters.

ReplyDeleteNo, sadly. Just a super strange "asian-inspired" roof. I wish huge halfpipes randomly placed around Nouméa. That would be bodacious.
